Russia, U.S. to boost avsec co-operation
At the beginning of January, the transport minister of Russia visited Washington to promote closer aviation security cooperation between his country and the U.S. RIA Novosti news agency reported that prospects for closer avsec ties between the two countries are good. Prospects are apparently also good that a deal will be worked out to increase by almost 20 percent the number of U.S. flights permitted to overfly Russian territory on transpolar flight paths, a request the U.S. made earlier.
Igor Levitin has pledged to improve the flight safety standards of Russian civil aviation, to bring them into line with international expectations. "Flight safety is of great importance to us,” Levitin said. “We realize that we can only achieve high safety standards if our flight safety regulations are harmonized with those that exist in other countries."

Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport has invested heavily in state-of-the-art aviation security systems over the last few years
