Musharraf’s plane attacked

The aircraft carrying Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf was fired at on July 6 as it took off from a military airbase at Islamabad airport. About 25 rounds of light machine-gun fired were directed at the aircraft: two antiaircraft guns and a light machinegun were later captured by police who raided a house located near one of the airport’s flight paths.

The president’s aircraft was taking off from Chaklala airbase, a military airbase that adjoins Islamabad International Airport. The plane was undamaged in the incident, and proceeded to southern Pakistan, where the president was due to visit areas hard-hit by recent floods.

Some press reports speculated that the attack might have been related to recent sectarian unrest in the country. At press time, militants opposed to Musharraf’s pro-Western stance continued to hold out against military and police forces in their occupation of the Red Mosque (Lal Masjid) in the capital.
