Canadian airports urge action on re-screening
The Canadian Airports Council has called on Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President George Bush to resolve what it calls a critical issue involving Canadian baggage connecting through U.S. airports when they meet at the August leadership summit to dscuss matters relating to the Security and prosperity Partnership. The CAC says that the re-screening of Canadian bags connecting through U.S. airports, which has been in place since 9/11, adds to the minimum connecting times for trans-border travelers connecting in the U.S.
The re-screening is required because the U.S. does not recognize Canadian baggage screening standards established after 9/11. But the CAC’s position is that it needlessly uses up valuable security resources through duplication and adds to minimum connecting times for travelers originating in Canada and connecting through the U.S. In the case of flight delays, this added time can also lead to an increase in bags missing connecting flights.
