U.S. chooses radiation detectors
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) has selected Thermo Electron Corp. to deliver high performance advanced spectroscopic portal (ASP) monitors. The monitors will be used to detect and interdict the entry into the U.S. of illicit nuclear weapons and radiological materials.
Thermo won the contract after a successful demonstration of an ASP monitor prototype at the government’s test site in Nevada, in which the system met DNDO performance criteria for next-generation radiation detection. The DNDO’s ASP program envisions the deployment of radiation detection equipment to more than 380 port and border sites over the next three years.

By optimizing selectivity, sensitivity, probability of detection and false alarm rates,
ASP monitors support security personnel decision-making at points of entry
