Boeing has hit a milestone in developing its "Little Bird" unmanned helicopter system with the craft's first unmanned flight. The flight was completed at the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona at the end of June. The modified MD 530F single-turbine helicopter flew a 20-minute flight and landed within 6 inches of the targeted landing location.
The Little Bird is being developed for a range of military applications, including target identification, resupply and weapons firings, but because the project envisions an add-on kit being developed that can convert existing craft to UAVs, the likelihood is that civilian applications will also be targeted.
Until June's landmark flight, test missions of Boeing's Little Bird UAV always had a safety pilot on board
