APL executive calls for cargo standards

Earl Agron, vice-president of security for freight container carrier APL, has called on nations to cooperate in developing practical measures to improve the security of global supply chains. Addressing the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Symposium on Total Supply Chain Security in Singapore on July 6, Agron championed a five-step approach including public-private cooperation, data-gathering and a regulatory framework that balances security with the need to keep trade flowing.

"There is an avalanche of technology solutions looking for a problem to solve," he said. "We need to pause and find the right technology in a more systematic way." (See recent TransSec e-newsletters and our next print edition for more on the need for security standards.)
