New York bomb plot foiled

A few days before the Mumbai attacks, U.S. security and law enforcement agencies announced that they had detected and foiled a plan to bomb New York City's Holland Tunnel, which links Manhattan and Jersey City under the Hudson River. U.S. authorities were helped by Lebanese security agencies, which arrested one of the alleged plotters.

The plan envisioned a massive blast that would rupture the tunnel and send a torrent of water racing into lower Manhattan, although various experts suggested that such a blast would be very difficult to engineer and that even if it were carried out, major flooding would be unlikely.

The plot was initially detected by the FBI through monitoring of Internet chat rooms. Subways and other tunnels in New York were also among the intended targets. At press time the investigation was still continuing, with suspects located all over the world.

The Holland Tunnel is a major commuter route to and from lower Manhattan
