Material ID system wins security challenge

A new fingerprint-based system aimed at reducing counterfeiting and easing the tracking of goods and documents has won the Global Security Challenge. The competition seeks the most promising security startup in the world, and the latest US$10,000 prize went to Ingenia, a British company for its Laser Surface Authentication (LSA) technology.

LSA reads the surface of paper, plastics and metals using a low-cost laser and analyzes structure with a reliability level of at least one million trillion, according to the company. The reflected laser from the surface under examination is used to capture microscopic signatures of the surface. The information, which constitutes a material’s unique fingerprint, provides a new way of authenticating and tracking goods and documents from credit cards, ID cards and passports to medicines and automotive and aerospace components.
