Travel retail council welcomes “business as usual”

The European Travel Retail Council (ETRC) has issued a statement welcoming the move by the European Commission to return to an almost “business as usual” approach to travel retailing at airports. The EC recently decided that post-security airport retailing could return to operating as it did before the “liquid bomber” scare in August, which initially prompted a severe crackdown on sales of any kinds of liquids.

The key to the new measures is the use of sealed bags for liquids brought to the airport or purchased prior to security clearance. The bags will be recognized as secure within all European Union airports.

“We welcome the rules agreed today as being both pragmatic and necessary,” said ETRC president Frank O’Connell in a statement on Oct, 5. “Security has been improved to meet new threats, whilst the impact upon the passenger experience at the airport has been kept to a minimum.” O’Connell called on all European countries to implement the rules as quickly as possible so that passengers would not be faced by a confusing mix of regulations.
