Thermo announces backpack radiation detector

Thermo Electron Corp. has announced the portable PackEye radiation detection backpack. The PackEye is designed to give emergency response and law enforcement personnel a sensitive, portable option for monitoring and responding to dangerous radiation. The unit houses a gamma and neutron radiation detection system that features Thermo’s Natural Background Rejection (NBR) technology.

The NBR system is now deployed in more than 2000 devices around the world, and discriminates rapidly between natural and artificial gamma radiation. This enables field personnel to quickly distinguish between harmless natural radiation and credible threats, eliminating unnecessary escalation. The system is optionally configured with a pocket-sized personal gamma radiation detector – the RadEye PRD – or an isotope identification meter, and the Interceptor for quick and accurate interpretation of alarm data.
